Skin Story

Here’s a little history on my skin.

I started off as most little girls with minimal fuss and care for my skin. I remember following my mother to her facials and quietly sitting at the corner waiting for her to be done. However, it was only when I entered the industry that it dawned on me that skincare was so important.

When I first started out and got introduced to heavy make up, I remember the skin below my eye getting flaky and dry because of an allergy. Till now, I do not know what caused it. It could be wrong make up, it could be dirty brushes, or it could simply be the skin’s way of telling you you’re not taking care of it enough. That dry patch of skin was enough to scare me. Dry skin does not allow make up to sit well, so you could just see that patch no matter how well you concealed it. Many veterans then recommended products which I could use on my face and eye area to improve the condition. I started using something that was extremely rich (so it would be extremely hydrating) and I did see results. However it was also too oily so I ended up with tiny white spots below the eye area.

Fast forward. The dry patch healed, and I moved on with life. Started basic skincare as well.

Then came “The Little Nyonya”. I worked under pretty harsh conditions. I slept an average of 1.5 hours everyday, so basically my body didn’t have sufficient time to recover from anything that I put myself through in the day. The production was burning joss sticks everyday in huge amounts to create the smoky effects well suited for period dramas. My body broke out in rashes (thank goodness the rash spared my face). It was so bad they had to send me to the doctor’s. Atopic Eczema. From then on, I have super sensitive skin such that during trying and harsh conditions, I will break out in a rash, start itching, or get bumps on my body or sometimes face.

This is the reason I go for water based products. Something that my skin can readily absorb and also not tip the skin’s natural balance. I think it comes with knowing my skin after all that it’s been through with me. It is important to know what your skin needs, because it does change with time.

I’m huge on face mists as well, especially when I’m filming and I feel my skin needs some refreshing and cooling down. Sometimes I just spray lots of it on a spot and flood it over when I feel minor irritations coming on.

And then, came Skininc. Its customized blend suits what my skin needs. Everyone is different and having something tailor made for your skin condition is important. I was introduced to Ceramide Serum, which helped to alleviate my skin sensitivities and when signs of irritations appeared. After application, the bumps went down fast enough. I love the Pure Revival Peel as well. It exfoliates without leaving your skin stripped of moisture. I believe that whatever you do, you should want your skin to feel supple and soft and not dry and squeaky clean. The Optimizer Voyage also helped to prep my skin to boost absorption of skincare and to allow make up to sit well. I have been using it for awhile now, before photoshoots, events and also the Star Awards. I did wish that the Optimizer Voyage had a kind of timer beep though, so that I knew how much time into the 10 minutes I was in instead of having to constantly keep my eye on the clock.

My skin has mostly recovered from all that torture I put it through while filming, but I do make an extra effort to prevent future disasters from happening. I’ve been blessed with good skin (all thanks to mum), but I can’t take it for granted, seeing how things have happened through the years. We shouldn’t take anything for granted. Period.
